| Director: Guillermo del Toro Stars: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones (Full Cast) Studio: Universal PicturesThe Plot: When the mythical world engages their campaign to take over the Earth, the U.S. government reaches out to the only department staffed to handle the potential catastrophe: The Bureau for Paranormal Research, who once again turns to the demon hero Hellboy (Perelman) and his teammates to stop a merciless dictator from carrying out his plan. THE BUZZ: Here's a thought: If 2008 is the year of the superhero, and Universal recently turned the dark-horse candidate Wanted into a hit, then maybe HBII will warrant a third installment, which has been the subject of rumors over the past several weeks. (How Guillermo del Toro would find the time to complete the trilogy, however, is an unsolvable mystery, since The Hobbit two-parter should have him sequestered away until 2012.) Though I am still unsure if the beefed-up crew from
the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense will best their 2004 debut, there's no doubt that GdT's creative vision will make for the best-looking comic-book adaptation to date. I just wish Universal didn't feel the need to reveal so much of the movie in its series of trailers, previews, and TV spots; I feel like I watched the entire movie while sitting at the bar last week. I'd rather spend time nerding out at the movie's official production site, a home to all the minute details involved in bringing Mike Mignola's comic-book world (and underworld) to life. | Director: Eric Brevig Stars: Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson (Full Cast) Studio: New Line CinemaThe Plot: A geologist (Fraser) on a special mission with his son (Hutcherson) discovers the entrance into a previously unseen world. THE BUZZ: All of the sudden, Brendan Fraser is the go-to guy for family entertainment, what with Journey 3D, Inkheart (another New Line release, like Journey), and The Mummy 3 all due out within a year of one another. But released so close to Mummy 3, another father-and-son-in-peril adventure, even Fraser might have trouble distinguishing his characters from one another. Here's a hint: This is the one that takes a classic tale by Jules Verne and runs it through a computer software suite. | Director: Brian Robbins Stars: Eddie Murphy, Elizabeth Banks (Full Cast) Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film CorporationThe Plot: Tiny aliens pilot a spacecraft that takes the form of a human (Murphy), while the captain of the ship jeopardizes his crew and their mission to save their planet when he falls for beautiful earthling (Banks). THE BUZZ: We interrupt Elizabeth Banks's apparent temporary insanity to pose this question: What part of Pluto Nash did studios not recall when Murphy's name came up for another sci-fi comedy? We're guessing it's not the $4 million gross. Not that Murphy fans care, they turned Norbit into a number one hit. Apparently the more characters he plays in a movie, the more it makes. So, here's another guess: he plays ten in this one? | Director: Jason Freeland Stars: Erik Smith, Tierra Abbott, Vinessa Shaw (Full Cast) Studio: Roadside AttractionsThe Plot: As 15-year-old April (Holland) tries to piece together a life in Los Angeles, she encounters a group of her peers who are all struggling for a toehold in the city as well. THE BUZZ: From the look and feel of things here, Jason Freeland's LA story sounds like Cloverfield with a pot-dealing realtor as the monster who preys upon cute young things. The nicest thing we've heard about the drama? That Freeland throws a curve most every time you think you know what's going to happen next. And the worst? That at the end of the movie, you feel like you are a movie exec on the receiving end of a pitch. Message Boards: dreadful dreadful film | Lola Sanchez in it... | Director: Austin Chick Stars: Josh Hartnett, Naomie Harris, Adam Scott (Full Cast) Studio: First Look InternationalThe Plot: Set in the summer of 2001, a Internet-startup guru (Hartnett) struggles to keep his company in the black and his personal life together. THE BUZZ: Is Josh Hartnett the new Ben Affleck? Austin Chick's follow up to XX/XY sure makes him seem like something of a has-been -- maybe that's why he's the perfect pick to portray a dot-com millionaire whose life is about to fall apart in the days before 9/11. Ugh, I can already hear his voice-overs about harnessing the power of the Web for wealth and fame. At least this one has a supporting cast that includes Naomie Harris and Andre Royo (Bubbles from "The Wire"). And Bowie! | Director: T. Sean Shannon Stars: Spencer Breslin, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nikki Blonsky (Full Cast) Studio: City Lights Home EntertainmentThe Plot: A prematurely balding teenager (Breslin) tries to adapt to life at his new high school, where he faces incessant teasing and harassment.
THE BUZZ: Writer-comedian T. Sean Shannon gets major support from "Saturday Night Live" cast members of the past and present with his directorial debut, a comedy that pairs Spencer Breslin with Nikki Blonsky (in her first role since Hairspray) as the duo faces the evil-doers of their high school. Here's the trailer, but good luck on finding an official site for this one. But I understand the movie will roll out beyond NYC/LA in the coming weeks. | Director: Peter Berg Stars: Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia PicturesThe Plot: An apathetic, hard-living superhero (Smith) who has fallen out of favor with the public is approached by a public relations professional (Bateman) who has ideas as to how he can repair his client's image. User Rating: THE BUZZ: What we keep thinking about here is the fact that Peter Berg, despite being one of the most versatile people working in Hollywood, has never directed a blockbuster. Until now, right? Right, but only because this is a Will Smith starrer; the man who hasn't had a flop since the year 2000 is one of only a few actors who could have greenlighted this project. (With most any other actor, Hancock would be a January release and, at best, a dicey superhero prospect.) But the question remains: Will Hancock hit the heights of Tony Stark and, to a slightly lesser extent, Bruce Banner? With Smith in anti-hero mode, a hard-fought PG-13 rating, and a definite lack of buzz, we're wondering if this might underwhelm. Maybe that why Sony has all but suppressed the relationship between Will and Charlize's characters here.

| Director: Andrew Stanton Stars: Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin (Full Cast) Studio: Walt Disney Studios Motion PicturesThe Plot: A trash-compacting robot learns there's more to life than cleaning up the planet that humans polluted when he falls for a sleek, female droid, then sets out on an intergalactic journey to be with her.
User Rating: THE BUZZ: Number Five is alive and animated. According to legend, this film is the last of the leftover projects the Incredibles crew chewed over during an infamous lunch date back in 1994 that spawned several Oscars for Pixar and Disney. Now the 'toon twosome are poised for another box office return that's out of this world (and hopefully still doing lunch together). P.S. Audiences will be treated to the short film Presto before heading out into space. | Director: Timur Bekmambetov Stars: Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman (Full Cast) Studio: Universal PicturesThe Plot: Wesley Gibson (McAvoy) is rescued from his miserable existence by the gun-toting Fox (Jolie), a member of the Fraternity, a group of assassins to which Wesley's recently murdered father belonged. As their new recruit, Wesley learns he's truly a chip off the old block as he is trained by Fox and the Fraternity's leader, Sloan (Freeman) -- but what secrets are they hiding? User Rating: THE BUZZ: Timur Bekmambetov's English-language debut is similar in theme to his criminally mismarketed Night Watch, except Wanted is spun off from a pottymouthed comic serial darker in nature than V for Vendetta and Sin City combined. While the buzz surrounding this has simmered, initial reviews have stoked the flames, as have the reports that Universal already has a sequel in development. Bekmambetov might just break through in the U.S., but if not, it's not like his career is hurting in his native Russia. | Director: Peter Segal Stars: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin (Full Cast) Studio: Warner Bros. PicturesThe Plot: Maxwell Smart (Carrell), Agent 86 for CONTROL, battles the forces of KAOS with the more-competent Agent 99 (Hathaway) at his side. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Hmmm... Mel Brooks and Buck Henry as reinterpreted by the guys who wrote Failure to Launch.... Where's KAOS when you really need them? Still, we give courageous snaps to the nice casting, but weren't Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 supposed to be romantic foils? Carell, handsome as he is, seems more suited to playing Hathaway's father than her boyfriend. We'll be watching "Office" reruns and the Devil Wears Prada DVD instead, thanks. | Director: Mark Osborne John Stevenson Stars: Jack Black, Ian McShane, Angelina Jolie (Full Cast) Studio: DreamWorks AnimationThe Plot: Po (Black), a reluctant panda bear, is recruited by a team of Kung Fu masters and trained in the ways of the ancient martial art in order to protect the Valley of Peace from an evil snow leopard. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Just when you thought it wasn't possible to out blitz Bee Movie's ad nauseam marketing crusade for an animated movie lacking green ogres, penguins or Pixar, this cuddly black-and-white slacker comes along and starts telling us to turn off our cell phones before every single movie! Okay, we get it, build awareness, create interest. But really, aren't pandas and kung fu pretty interesting on their own already? Still, gotta hand it to D'Works for booking another Stiller, er, stellar voiceover cast. | Director: Louis Leterrier Stars: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Tim Roth (Full Cast) Studio: Universal PicturesThe Plot: Geneticist Bruce Banner (Norton) takes flight in order to understand -- and hopefully cure -- that the condition that turns him into a monster. Complicating his situation is the military initiative that wants him captured and controlled, as well as the arrival of a more-deadly nemesis: The Abomination. User Rating: THE BUZZ: One of the reasons the Marvel Universe is the hottest Hollywood territory is because of their note-perfect casting. With Edward Norton ascending to the role he almost nabbed the first time around, we can finally let Ang Lee's Hulk rest and consider this movie the first in a sure-shot franchise. Transporter director Louis Leterrier is working off a screenplay by Zak Penn (who is now working on the Captain America and Avengers scripts), so we knew from day one that the action will be ratcheted way up (uhh, check!), without sacrificing too much characterization. But because this is an Internet-supported movie, there's very little we don't know about it sight unseen. So, what can we ask? Well, did you hear that the film's third act will include a 26-minute Hulk vs. Abomination fight sequence? (Leterrier let's it rip here.) Ummm, did you also read that CHUD article that let it be known there's a handful of easter-egg characters to be found throughout the film? P.S. If you were following the whole screenplay drama, Norton's no longer getting credit for it, just Penn is. Message Boards: Who would you pick to kill the Hulk??? | OFFENSIVE! | Director: Steven Spielberg Stars: Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Shia LaBeouf (Full Cast) Studio: Paramount Home EntertainmentThe Plot: Famed archaeologist/adventurer Dr. Henry "Indiana" Jones (Ford) is called back into action to stop a Soviet plot to uncover and use ancient artifacts in order to take over the world. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Remember how big May was last year with the third installments of Spider-Man, Pirates, and Shrek all coming out within weeks of one another? While we don't think Tony Stark, Aslan, and Indy will ultimately generate the same box office sensation worldwide, they have a bit more to offer in terms of surprise, delight, and most of all, mystery (barring Prince Caspian?). IJ4 is perhaps the most enigmatic of the trio, what with its official site (launched, it seems, before production even began), formerly-well-hidden plot details, spoiler-spilling extras, and splashy world premiere at Cannes. Now that we essentially know these details, we're marinating on the idea of Shia "Mutt" LaBeouf inheriting the franchise for a rumored fifth chapter. Don't chuff, Spielberg wants it!

| Director: Michael Patrick King Stars: Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon (Full Cast) Studio: New Line CinemaThe Plot: Set four years after we last saw the ladies, Carrie (Parker), Samantha (Cattrall), Miranda (Nixon), and Charlotte (Davis) negotiate their friendships, romances, and careers in New York City. At the center of it all is Carrie's pending nuptials to Mr. Big (Noth) ... User Rating: THE BUZZ: Sorry if this is obscure (or annoying) but if there's one thing Strangers with Candy the movie taught me, it's this: Don't watch the big-screen versions of your favorite television shows in theaters; experience them at home on DVD, either alone or with your pals ... essentially, however you watched the show when it was on TV. There's something in a transfer such as this that numbs the overall experience. Yes, we're excited for Carrie & Co. to strut the streets of NYC again (and we're glad that SJP and KC are BFFs, or at least acting like it), but we see no reason to pick out a cute theater-going outfit when you can relax at home in your matched separates by Bitten, surrounded by your own personal Stanford Blatches and/or Steve Bradys, sipping on a Fanta Orange and cough syrup cocktail, waiting to see how the gals look in close-ups. Speaking of close-ups, we didn't think that Cynthia Nixon would be the one to appear as though she had the most work done since 2004 ... | Director: Dennis Dugan Stars: Adam Sandler, John Turturro, Emmanuelle Chriqui (Full Cast) Studio: Columbia PicturesThe Plot: A Mossad agent (Sandler) orchestrates a scenario that will allow him to move to New York City and reinvent himself as a hairstylist. User Rating: THE BUZZ: Sounds like a Sacha Baron Cohen concept to us, but really this is a comedy triangle formed by Sandler, his go-to director Dennis Dugan, and He Who Makes It Funny, Judd Apatow, who wrote Zohan with Sandler and Robert Smigel. Sure, the premise sounds wafer thin and potentially offensive to both secret agents and hair stylists, but, hey, is that a Mariah Carey sighting? Expect the comedy here to go from gross-out to soft-and-matured in three acts.
